Nails as the new art form

One of the leading nails trends this year is using the nail plate as an art canvas, from simple dots and stripes through to more extravagant masterpieces. With inspiration and tutorials abounding on social media there are some fundamentals to follow to create a nail ‘work of art’. Whether you are a beginner or on your way to becoming a pro, adopt these rules – nail art is accessible and achievable for all.

Begin with a clean slate

Without a clean slate to start with, nail art is set up for failure. Ensure nails are well prepared with a trim, file and buff at a minimum. Imagine the nail as a piece of art, offset by the cuticle, which is healthy and neatly groomed. Cuticle care products are a vital step for framing up the nail art – tidy up cuticles with cuticle remover and nourish daily with an oil or cream.

Strengthen weak nails

The tip of the nail is the most vulnerable part and prone to chipping and peeling, an absolute disaster for nail-art designs! To boost the overall strength of nails and to harden the tips, apply a targeted treatment product in the lead up to attempting nail art.

Prime, prime, prime

Priming the nail is essential to preparing a canvas upon which nail-art can literally ‘stick to’. Remove any traces of oil on the nail using an acetone remover, followed by an adhesive base coat for a ‘Velcro-like’ effect.

Seal with a topcoat

Apply a long-lasting, glossy topcoat that will ‘fix’ the design in place. To keep it fresh and prevent nail snags, reapply every two days. For added durability, don’t forget to paint under the nail tip to lock it in.

Don’t rush

Nail art is a mindful protocol that involves periods of down time and drying in between steps. Set aside a block of time, relax and enjoy a calming antidote. Keep a polish remover pen handy to correct any mistakes.

Don’t forget your hands

Nail-art is a visual feast set off by well-groomed hands – focus attention on hand exfoliation, hydration and treatment of age spots.
