My nails are under the weather, how can I revive them?

It’s not unusual for nails at this time of the year to feel a little under the weather – cue dry, brittle, weak and/or dull! Help is at hand to restore a healthy nail radiance just in time for spring… that is, if you are consistent and dedicated to following an inside out approach.

Hydration Power

Dry nails will result in breakage and are remedied with care from the nail root through to the tip. Apply a nourishing cream at night to soak into the root or matrix of the nail bed, improving nail elasticity and hydration in new nail growth. With frequent cuticle oil use, the frame of your nail will be nourished and pesky hangnails (both painful and unsightly), are kept at bay. Protect nails topically with a caring base coat that moisturises the nail plate.

Fortify Nails

The tips of the nail are the most fragile and a penetrating nail hardener applied once a week will reinforce them against splitting. By quickly bonding the nail plates together, a hardener allows soft, flaking or splitting nails to become healthy and strong. Don’t use in place of a base or nail polish, this is a treatment for the nails.

Pause on Polish

Hit the pause button for polish and manicures to allow time for the nail treatment course to work wonders. This will also negate the need for acetone removers that strip the natural oil from the nail – ideally use a non-acetone remover if you have to. Strengthen the natural skin barrier of hands and relieve discomfort by frequently applying hand cream throughout the day and overnight.

Nourish from Within

There is a direct correlation between what you eat and the condition of your nails. Feed the nails from within by incorporating nail-loving foods rich in varied vitamins, calcium and minerals. An important mineral for nails is silicium, which is like ‘cell cement’ and helps nails to grow faster and more resistant to minor damages. It’s found in vegetables, in particular garlic and onions.

Proceed Gently

Keep nails neat and tidy through regular maintenance, which will in turn promote nail growth. Attend to your nails with regular grooming and deal with nail breakages immediately to prevent any further damage. Protect hands and nails from water exposure with gloves.  Use a gentle, nourishing hand sanitiser.

Nail spa

A focused, targeted mini treatment weekly is the TLC nails need in winter… try a Sunday nail reset ritual while watching your favourite show; soak, mask and cream with gloves overnight for best results.
