Whilst a day to celebrate nail polish may seem trivial, there is a history to how polishes came to be and a host of reasons why nail polish is celebrated and a passion for so many.

Painting fingernails is a practice that dates back to 5000 BC when henna was used to adorn fingertips and has developed through different eras… like being used to symbolise rank and file during Babylonian times or social class standing in China around 3000 BC, with royalty wearing dark shades and the commoners wearing nudes. The first nail parlors sprung up in Paris in the mid-1800s offering ‘unfussy buff and shine’ services to the public. Coloured nail polish did not come about until the 1920’s when up to that point, nails were tinted with powders and creams. French makeup artist Michelle Menaud reformulated the enamel used on automobiles to make it safe to use on nails. Since then, the world of polishes has exploded and globally is an industry valued at $14.3 billion (USD – 2021)*.

With a myriad of shades and effects available, painting nails can be a deeply satisfying process that offers multiple benefits…

Self-care

Painting nails is therapeutic and fosters mindfulness and relaxation. It has been said that if you suffer from mild anxiety, the repetitive motion and concentration required for painting nails can silence racing thoughts and provide a quiet refuge, a form of meditation if you will. Having a professional manicure provides respite from the daily stresses of life, relieving tension and giving hands a complete makeover. The feel-good factor is real.

Self-expression

Painting nails is a form of self-expression, a style statement. Depending on your mood or the season, the options are limitless from chic nudes all the way through to bold brightsSeasonal nail trends are as celebrated as fashion itself and nail polish is an easy way to buy into new trends and accessorise for the season. Nail-art takes nail painting to the next level, a fun and creative outlet, from simple dot design to more complex abstract designs.

Confidence booster

Sitting down to paint nails is a simple gesture to say ‘I’m worth it’ and deserve this time and attention. So many people talk with their hands, so having polished nails in a pretty shade can be a great mood booster. Flaunting a shiny new manicure can do wonders for self esteem and is the easiest way to beautify the hands. After all, our hand beauty is on display for all to see through the day.

Improved nail health

Taking the care and time to look after nails and cuticles promotes overall nail health and wellbeing. Look for options that are toxin-free and benefit nails by feeding them with quality ingredients, like organic silicon (silicium) which provides increased nail strength and flexibility. Polish will only look as good as the preparation and finish that is done at the same time, so invest in a quality base coat and top coat that will make a manicure last longer. All the supporting products used through a manicure like cuticle treatments, accessories and targeted solutions all work together to keep nails and hands in top condition.
