Why your hands deserve a skincare routine

For years, skincare has been face-focused, with multi-step routines, a ‘prevention is better than cure’ mindset and daily SPF use a non-negotiable. However, the area most susceptible to the visible signs of ageing has quietly been overlooked: our hands.

Constantly exposed to the elements, washed multiple times a day and often forgotten until they're dry or uncomfortable, our hands experience some of the greatest environmental stress of anywhere on the body. It's no surprise that the hands are one of the first places to reveal signs of ageing.

A new beauty movement is shifting the conversation as consumers embrace the "skinification” trend, that of applying skincare routine principles to every part of the body. Hand care has become one of beauty's fastest-growing rituals, alongside the scalp, hair and body.

By introducing a skincare routine for the hands, these negative effects can be remedied:

  • Dehydrated, rough skin
  • Dry or cracked cuticles
  • Brittle, peeling nails
  • Reduced nail flexibility
  • A dull, tired-looking appearance

Using a few targeted products consistently, results in significant visible changes. Follow these simple steps to elevate the care of your hands.

Step 1: Hydrate the skin

Hydration forms the foundation of healthy-looking hands. Regularly apply hand cream throughout the day, particularly after hand washing. Look for options available to specifically treat extremely chapped hands, the visible appearance of age spots or used as an intensive overnight treatment (with gloves ideally).

Expert tip: Keep a tube at your desk, in your handbag and near the sink so hydration becomes a daily habit.

Step 2: Don’t neglect cuticles

Healthy cuticles are the foundation of beautiful nails. Cuticle care nourishes and protects the delicate skin around the nails and supports the growth of healthy nails.

Step 3: Treat your nails like skin

If your nails are feeling dry, weak or recovering from gels or acrylics, targeted nourishment is essential. Mavala Nailactan delivers intensive conditioning to dehydrated nails, helping restore flexibility and resilience. Applied in the evening, it becomes an overnight treatment that works while you sleep, supporting healthier-looking nails over time.

Step 4: Never skip SPF

Your hands receive more sun exposure than you may realise and are one of the first areas to show pigmentation and signs of ageing. Apply a high SPF sunscreen to the back of your hands every morning and reapply throughout the day, especially after washing or driving. It's one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep hands looking youthful.

Step 5: Invest in an LED hand mask

LED hand masks use specific wavelengths of light (most commonly red light) to support collagen production and help improve the appearance of fine lines, skin firmness and overall skin quality over time. It's a non-invasive treatment that can easily be incorporated into your daily or weekly hand-care ritual.

Beautiful hands with healthy skin, strong natural nails and impeccable cuticle care have arguably become a status symbol. No matter how meticulously we care for our face, our hands always end up revealing our true age.
