Mature-age eye beauty tweaks!

Has your eye makeup lost its sparkle, perhaps not sitting quite right these days? Subtle application tweaks can have a dramatic effect on opening the eyes. One of Australia’s most in-demand makeup artists and founder of The Makeup Insider podcast, Vanessa Barney, shares her expertise to enhance and refresh the eye area when things start to shift post 40 years!

What is the biggest mistake women are making with their eyes as they age?

Not curling lashes. Curling your lashes is the fastest and best way to open and lift them. Follow with your favourite mascara.

How should eyeliner be applied differently?

I would opt for a soft, more blended line rather than a harsh line. Try brown over traditional black.

What are your tips for preparing the eye?

I love to use an eye base to create a foundation beforehand – it not only locks in the product for a longer-lasting effect but prepares the eye for improved application and minimises smudging.

My eye area is oily, how can I control smudging and running?

Start with a clean, oil-controlled base by priming the lids. Lightly set your lids and under-eye area with a translucent powder or a matte eyeshadow before applying anything else, creating better grip. Switch formulas, go for a waterproof or tubing mascara and gel or liquid eyeliners.

Is there a trick with eyeshadow application?

This may sound strange, but do it with your eyes open, especially if you have hooded eyes. Use a light soft shimmer or matte shade on the inner corner of the eyes and upwards towards the outer corner of the eye.

How do you prevent product from settling into your creases?

This one is tricky, as when we go about our day our faces move, so the product moves. I would recommend using less product in areas where you have lines and if product settles there, tap it out with your finger.

If my eyes are hooded, what do I do?

Oh my favourite question, I have hooded eyes. Eyes open when you do eyeshadow, always go up and out never down, lining your upper lash line is a great way to open hooded eyes.

Should there be any eye makeup products that are a NO NO?

I don’t believe in NO NO’s, if you love it and it works for you, go for it.

How do I treat sparse brows or eyelashes?

There are plenty of options. Start with an at-home approach by investing in a strengthening serum for lashes and brows, which must be used consistently to see results. Use a soft eyebrow pencil to enhance and shape the brows plus a volume focused mascara. Other professional options include brow micro blading and semi-permanent lashes.

Any tricks for dark circles?

Under eye brightness matters for opening the eyes. I love using a hydrating correcting concealer first for dark circles, followed by lightly setting with powder. Avoid heavy application which can appear cakey.
