It’s that mood-boosting time of year when the days are warming and nature is changing with a shift in general energy and optimism. Cue beauty inspiration to switch up your products and adopt the latest trends - try these spring ideas with insights and tips from leading makeup artist Charlotte Ravet.
Trend # 1 – Magnified, natural skin
The minimalist, no makeup look is in, as natural faces take the place of heavily made-up complexions. When was the last time you applied a full face of foundation? ‘Beautiful skin and the natural, effortless makeup look have taken center stage. With staying at home, a lot of women are enjoying a lightweight makeup look with more of a focus on skincare – like trying a tinted moisturiser or BB cream. Add a few drops of a dewy serum or oil to give your skin a radiant glow’ encourages Ravet.

Trend # 2 – A rainbow of shades
As a remedy to widespread gloom, fashion trends this season unveiled a rainbow of shades from soft, serene hues to calm and subdue through too upbeat brights, symbolising hope and optimism. ‘Zoom calls also became the new way to express ourselves as everything is allowed! Lipstick, nails, glamour makeup! Once we return to normal, my guess is that a lot of women will enjoy putting on makeup again and having a play with colours and products. It’s like for everything we used to do, putting on makeup again to go out will be even more exciting!’ says Ravet.

Trend # 3 – Playful lips
There is a mood to celebrate lips when they can be seen, making a statement. Nude shades are taking a backseat in favour of bright, lively shades of hot pink, orange and fuchsia. ‘I would suggest having a play and mix colours for this spring. I have a specific technique to apply lipstick on my clients to create the perfect lip shape and show off your lipstick. The perfect lips should be rounder at the top lip and be a little smaller at the bottom lip. To achieve this effect I would recommend using a bit of concealer on the bottom lip and avoid overdrawing the edges. But you can definitely outline a bit the top lip to give a fuller effect!’ advises Ravet.

Trend # 4 – A pop of colour on the eyes
Since the normalisation of mask wearing, eyes are in focus - look out for coloured eye pencils (particularly aqua and blue), bold mascara and defined lines and eyebrows. This is contrasted by more subtle, pastel eyeshodows. ‘A Cleopatra eye and blue liner have been seen in the Dior and Chanel runways. Armani features soft pastel tones and I have also observed that the 1960’s have made a come back with graphic liners and beehive hairstyles. Defined eyebrows give you a more youthful look.’ says Ravet

Trend # 5 – Lively nails
Nails are taking a fun, yet subtle twist this spring. Trending shades include pretty pastels and greens of all variety, think mint through to classy emerald. Create interest and surprise with your manicure by using alternate nail colours (either in the same colour family or contrasting brights) and mixing up the traditional French manicure with coloured tips. ‘When I think about nails I think about fun! I love keeping my nails natural and often change the nail polish shade to match it with my outfit and makeup. This season pastel colours with an accent seems to be the trend. I have also seen some coloured French manicures which is an unexpected way to make a more discreet look more fun.’ says Ravet.
