Natural beauty, all the way down to your nails

The green beauty movement continues to gain more ground, with innovative and sustainable plant-based ingredients that can replace ‘nasty’ ones. Here’s how your beauty routine can become even more green.

Certain beauty products have traditionally been petrochemical-laden, with no sign or hope of change, until now. Think nail polish, hair dyes and hair styling products, for example. Who’d have thought your nail polish could be 85% natural? Or that your hair dye could improve the condition of your hair, without ammonia, and have a subtle, pleasant scent?

A 2022 survey from statista.com revealed that over 25% of Australian consumers believe that having sustainable beauty and personal care products as very important, and this is set to grow. Mavala’s core philosophy is caring about the planet and minimising impact on the environment as much as possible, by sourcing ingredients as near to Switzerland as possible, reducing carbon footprint, and using ingredients that are biodegradable (plastic microbeads are a big no). Products are minimally packaged in recyclable materials and avoid boxes or cellophane.

Natural nail polish

New and ready to add to your green beauty routine are the Mavala Bio Minis with 85% natural ingredients. It’s a more eco-conscious alternative, with incredible plant technology. This new formulation (look out for the white bottle lid) has replaced traditionally chemical ingredients with plant-based ones from renewable farming resources, making this a healthier manicure for you and the environment.

Rather than using petrochemical-based solvents, they’re replaced with bio-sourced solvents derived from sugar cane, rice and beetroot. The solvent gives fluidity to the polish in the bottle, and acts on the drying time once the polish is on your nails.

Since 1962, Mavala has always used nitrocellulose in all nail polishes. This is a resin, obtained from wood pulp, and it forms a hard protective film when drying and helps with longevity of the polish – this resin also allows your nails to ‘breathe’ naturally, meaning air and water can pass through to the nail plate. As with all Mavala nail polishes, these are toxic free and cruelty free.

There are 16 beautiful shades in the Bio-Color range, and they’re available online and in store.
