Does your eye makeup need some attention? Maybe wearing a protective face mask has made you rethink your usual makeup routine? Try these fab tips from Jess Berg, international makeup artist based in Sydney.
How do you define eyes without looking overly made up?
Focus on your eyebrows. Eyebrows can literally change the shape of your face, so defining them can really enhance your whole makeup look while still keeping things natural. Getting the right shape is key and I would recommend professional shaping to start with for the best results. Natural, fuller brows are in, so you may consider microblading if your eyebrow hairs are sparse.
Brush brows up to reveal their true shape, then using a pencil or powder, fill in the brows, continuing in that same upward motion until you reach the desired effect. I love Mavala's Eyebrow Pencils as they’ve got a built-in brush, the colours are great and they are so easy to use.
Then, to add an extra wow factor to the eyes, curl your lashes and wear mascara. This is another really easy, high-impact way to define your eyes. Try Mavala's Eyelash Curler and Creamy Mascara enriched with silk proteins. If your lashes need extra help, try Mavala Double-Lash, a serum formulated for stronger, longer and thicker lashes.
How do you brighten tired looking eyes?
If I wake up to find my eyes are a bit puffy and tired looking, I brew some tea bags, pop them in the freezer for about 15-30 minutes, then hold them on my eyes for 10-20 minutes. The caffeine in the tea bags help to awaken under the eyes, and the cold helps to reduce the puffiness. I then use Mavala's Eye Contour Gel, which is great to put on for daytime use under makeup. It has a lovely cooling effect.
If your eyes still need a pick-me-up, apply highlighter or pale eyeshadow to the inner corner of the eyes, to instantly brighten tired eyes.
When mask wearing, what do you recommend for women who usually rely on lipstick to brighten her face or look?
To brighten up a face at any time, and especially when wearing a mask, I love brushing a little bit of blush on my eyelids to give a fresh, summertime glow. I also wear blush on the high apples of my cheeks and even right up near the eyes for a bit of a healthy, flushed glow to the face.
Women feel confused by eyeshadow - how do you like to use it?
Most of my clients do feel very confused about eyeshadow and how to use it because they are not familiar with how to apply it for their specific eye shape, as well as eyelid space. If you have minimal space between your eyebrows and lashes, so a small lid space, then it's important not to go too far up the lid with eyeshadow, as that can create a ‘hooded’ effect, which you want to avoid. For high impact, keep eyeshadow concentrated around the eyelashes. If your lid shape is generous, you can add definition by going up to the outer corner of your eye and define the crease for extra impact. I still use eyeshadow sparingly and the biggest tip I can give is to blend like there is no tomorrow! If you’re worried about creasing or have oilier skin, use Mavala Eye Base first to prep the eye and make shadow last.
Eyeliner – does it work for an everyday look?
Eyeliner can be a great way to define the eyes and I use it for almost every eye makeup application. Brown pencil liner is super flattering for all eye colours. Sweep the eyeliner along the upper lash line and blend it with a sponge tip to define the eyes, while still keeping it soft looking. I love Mavala's Khol-Kajal Eye Contour Pencils because they are great for sensitive eyes.
