Burgundy is a notoriously tricky nail shade to paint with, prone to pesky application mishaps from smudging to staining. Leading celebrity manicurist Oli Antunes features in the latest edition of the NEW T Magazine Australia using a top-selling burgundy shade #33 Las Vegas from Mavala.
Oli shares her top tips for achieving an editorial-like finish:
Take your time. This colour can be tricky, so have patience and don't rush your manicure.
Start with completely clean, buffed and shaped nails. Polish adheres better to smooth nails. This shade works really well on short nails that are less prone to chipping.
A smooth cuticle contour is essential for a neat finish with this shade. Use a cuticle remover and hoofstick to gently push back cuticles. This step is important, as the polish will glide on better and prevent the cuticle from being flooded with polish.
Use a protective base coat to prevent staining of the nails and also grip the colour better to the nail, making your manicure last longer.
Polish application - apply this shade in thin layers to avoid flooding the nail and cuticle with polish. Clean up your brush completely on one side, using the wall of the opening of the bottle, leaving enough product on the other side. Start with one brush stroke in the middle of the nail and brush lightly from cuticle to tip so you don't drag the colour or create stroke lines. Then work out to the sides of the nail. Wait for the first layer to dry completely before the second application.
Always have nail polish remover on hand to fix up any mistakes (it’s a good idea to get this ready prior to starting). Either use a portable polish remover pen or a clean-up brush dipped in polish remover.
Finish off with a hard wearing top coat to prevent chipping. Apply this every second day to give your manicure extra lasting power. I like to use a matt version during winter for extra texture. It’s important to allow lots of time for your nails to dry – add a fast drying spray to speed up the drying process.
