In a world that glorifies hustle, speed, and doing more, there’s something quietly luxurious about the simple ritual of a manicure. Whether in salon or at home, it offers a rare invitation to pause — to be still and to reconnect with yourself.
Guided by the expertise of Mavala’s Global Trainer, Lynn Mason, this step-by-step routine will elevate not only the look of your nails, but your state of mind. Preparation is purposeful, application is patient, and results are radiant.
Prepare: preparation is the cornerstone for an elegant-looking manicure that lasts the distance.
Step 1 - Remove old nail polish and shape each nail with an emery board in long sweeping curves from side to centre. Don’t file back and forth in a sawing motion as this will heat the nail, fray edges and encourage flaking.
Step 2 – Apply a small dot of cuticle cream to each nail and massage in. Dissolve a manicure pill in a bowl of warm water and soak hands (for a couple of minutes). Ordinary water transforms into an effervescent nourishing solution by adding the manicure pill.
Step 3 – Dry hands and brush a light coat of cuticle remover on the contour of each nail, gently push back overgrown cuticles with a hoof stick to create a refined, clear nail plate. Finally, use nail polish remover to clear all traces of moisture from the nail.
Paint: patience is essential to get the polished result perfect!
Step 4 – The tips of the nail are the most fragile and by using a penetrative nail hardener, your manicure will be less prone to chipping. Brush on to the free edge of the nails and leave for one minute to set.
Step 5 – Apply a base coat as a screen between the nail plate and polish. Don’t shake the bottle too hard prior to applying, as this creates tiny air bubbles that compromise the result. Allow to dry completely.
Step 6 – Apply two thin coats of desired nail polish, painting one finger at a time and painting all ten before you start applying the second coat. If you flood the nail with polish, it will not only appear blotchy but also be more prone to chipping.
Step 7 – Seal your manicure with a quick-drying top coat for a speedy result. Apply a small amount under the free edge of the nail for extra protection. Reapply every two days for lasting impact.
The finishing touch…
Step 8 – Once your manicure is completely dry, apply hand cream for a nourished, hydrated and radiant finish.
