It’s a fresh new season, the perfect time to try something different and a new lip colour is the fastest way to update your look. But how do you know what shade suits you? And what about winter-dry lips that suddenly take hold? We’ve got all the answers…
Choose a shade that suits you
You might have a signature lip look or try all sorts of colours. For a minimal, but does-all lipstick wardrobe, go for three shades of lip colour that can work with anything. A nude, a neutral (think stronger than your own lip colour) and a bright. That could be hot pink, red, or even brown.
Lipstick or gloss is something to have fun with and choosing a colour that makes you feel good is just as flattering and uplifting as one that ‘technically’ suits your skintone. If you’re unsure, as a guide, look to the undertones of your skin via your wrist. If your veins are blue, you’re likely to have a cool undertone to your skin. If they are slightly more of a green in colour, your undertone is warm. Our new Mavala Lipstick Collection Oh La La! has six beautiful shades, from pale pink to hot pink, neutral to brown, with a flattering satin or pearl finish, and glides on beautifully thanks to the shea butter, aloe vera and Vitamin E formulation.
Choose your lip look
Let’s score lip products in terms of natural to super chic…
Ultra-natural: Lip balm. Gives a nourished, plumped look and feels super comfortable on lips (plus it has moisturising ingredients), or choose one with a hint of colour. Also includes SPF15.
Natural to glam: Lip gloss. Depending on the colour you choose, can look everything from school/coffee run natural, to glossy and glam if you go for a hot pink or red gloss.
Statement lips: Lipliner. You can use liner in two ways – to naturally or overline your lips to give them a defined shape, or fill your lips with liner for a 90’s strong matte look.
Polished natural to super chic: Lipstick, whether it’s satin, pearl or matte, it looks polished. It’s easy to elevate a no-makeup look with strong lipstick and a swipe of mascara too.

How to deal with dry lips
Lips are one of the most exposed areas of your body and they don’t have the same amount of oil glands so aren’t as naturally nourished as the rest of your skin. Then when your lips feel dry, you tend to lick them, which makes things worse.
If your lips feel a little dry, but aren’t painful or split, try this tip from celebrity makeup artist Caroline Barnes: ‘Use a liquid exfoliant on a cotton pad over your lips. Rinse with water, pat dry, then follow with a serum or moisturiser with hyaluronic acid. Pat on until it’s dry, then lock in moisture with balm’. She says you can also use a toothbrush, flannel or gentle scrub to exfoliate.
From Mavala, try Multi-Moisturizing Intensive Serum with hyaluronic acid, then go for Lip Balm, which has soothing and sealing ingredients to retain moisture. If your lips are flaky or painful, skip exfoliating and go straight to lip balm, making sure you’re drinking enough water. Use lip balm before you go to bed at night to soothe and create a smoother surface for your lipstick in the morning.
