A new season brings with it new shoes and new shades of lipstick – meet Mavala’s Graceful collection, focusing on the colours and finishes of Autumn/Winter trends. But finding a match that complements your complexion can be tricky, so we’ve put together this pout-perfecting cheat sheet.

Your skin has its own undertone – cool, neutral or warm. Understanding where you fall will help you find the most flattering makeup matches – for lipstick and beyond. Generally if your skin has a pink or blueish hue you’re cool toned, if you have a yellow or olive hue you’re warm and if you have a mix of pink and yellow you’re neutral.

The simplest way to identify your skin’s undertone is to look at your veins, if your veins are blue you have cool undertones, if your veins are green you’re warm and if your veins are a mixture of both your undertone is neutral.

Once you know your undertone, use this as a handy guideline to select the best lipstick shade to enhance your skin tone.

Cool undertones

Shades with blue or purple undertones are perfect for your pout. It’s best to avoid pale shades as they can drain colour from your complexion, leaving your skin looking sallow and dull. Instead, look to berry tones and rich reds like Mavala’s 664 Pourpre and 666 Magenta.

Neutral undertones

The luckiest of the bunch, your neutral skin undertone means most shades will suit your complexion. But especially bright and bold hues like hot pink and coral to darker colours like rich browns and deep berries, including Mavala’s 661 Cognac and 662 Acajou

Warm undertones

The best lip shades for warm undertones are also warm. Think bright oranges, terracotta browns and cherry reds. These fiery, copper tones will enhance the warmness in your complexion. Look to Mavala’s 663 Corallin and 665 Bourgogne

New shades aren’t the only thing Autumn and Winter bring. Dry, chapped lips are another. For better-looking lipstick and improved staying-power, lip care is essential. Be sure to prep your lips with a gentle buff prior to lipstick application, along with a daily moisturising treatment like a nourishing lip balm.

For extra protection Mavala’s Lip Base is formulated to protect the delicate lips from dryness and chapping, while gentle fixing agents limit lipstick from smudging and fading. If your pout needs some TLC when the cold weather hits, apply Mavala’s Lip Balm every evening.
