Updating your look for winter feels uplifting, whether it’s for Zoom-friendly makeup, new nails in real life, or glossy hair for the weekend.

Nail your nail colour

Rich, strong shades always take the place of summer’s fun and decorative nail looks. Committing to a more dramatic nail colour is refreshing, and makes you feel pulled together, even when you’re juggling awkward between-season fashion. Think clean red and orange, mulberry or khaki, or shades of brown. ‘My recommendation for winter nails is a matte top coat’, says Oli Antunes, Makeup and Nail Artist, ‘a more textured finish instead of the high gloss of summer’. And how to improve the health of your nails for these standout shades? ‘Feed the nail root or matrix externally with a specialised cream and regularly apply a cuticle oil to nourish and protect the skin around the nails’, suggests Oli. Try Mavala Cuticle Oil or Cuticle Cream.

Tweak your hair colour

‘There are always seasonal trends – whether it’s crazy colours like pink or lilac, or a new technique, but customising your hair colour to your skintone is the most flattering way to go’, says Casey Vincent, founder & owner, Willow Hair Salon ‘The golden rule is to stay two shades either side of your natural colour – so in winter, brunettes can go two shades darker but keep to a rich, warm-based shade, and blondes look great with honey or caramel tones. In summer go brighter and fresher and experiment with two shades lighter’.

Home hair colouring has been a lifesaver over the last year. Look out for Color & Soin, glossy, permanent vegan home hair colourant from France, with no ammonia or harsh smell. It gives 100% grey coverage and – perfect for Australia – is resistant to UV rays and chlorine. (click here to find your nearest stockist or order online).

How to make the most of your glossy colour? Keep hair nourished with a hydrating care routine, extra hair masque treatments to combat hot iron curling and blow drying, and regular trims to stop dry and brittle ends in their tracks before hair becomes split.

Switch up your make up

Is it time to pack up your summery bronzer and lipgloss? Yes and no. ‘Coming into winter, we always see a movement away from sunny tones to more nurturing, earthy and warm shades’, says Oli Antunes, Makeup and Nail Artist. ‘Variations of chocolate and latte colours are big this season, as well as berry, plum-like hues and versatile khaki’. However, she also adds that the ‘no makeup, makeup’ look is here to stay, as people favour a paired-back makeup routine.

‘A lit-from-within glow on the outside is the holy grail for skin, with a focus on creating natural and glowing radiance’, she says.  ‘Eyes are the bride, driven by our current pandemic situation, with lips taking on the role of the bridesmaid. With mask-wearing still ever-changing, it’s time to experiment with bold eye statements. Try sharpening your eyeliner by using liquid or layered khol liner and make your lashes pop with coloured mascara. Wash a sheer pop of colour over your eyelids’.

Are you feeling a little out of touch with lips after on/off mask wearing? ‘Lips this season are lightly stained or freshly-kissed lips instead of a bold, full lip’, says Oli. ‘Don’t be afraid of experimenting! Dab plummy shades onto the lip for a more washed-out effect, a great way to transition between sheer glosses from summer to an understated winter look. Of course, at night lips can be ramped up with deeper shades, layered lips and a lip liner. Having said that, red lips never date and always transcend seasons – try a lip stain this winter’.  Try Mavala’s Graceful collection for the perfect deep plums and browns this winter.
